My passion for fitness started when I was about 16 years old. I started working out with my brother, Adrian, who started with Beachbody’s programs Insanity and P90x. We performed their workouts on and off, and I would get demotivated by the intensity of the workouts. My family had a gym membership for years, but I didn’t start actively going until around this time. I started with the classes at the gym but wouldn’t go anywhere near the weights. Then I started getting more involved in sports, such as tennis and ultimate frisbee. These two activities focused me the most on improving my fitness because they were challenging and provided a sense of achievement. Then, my family purchased P90x2. By this point, my mindset changed: I was learning the importance of weight training. P90x2 pushed the limits of my fitness. It motivated me to do one more rep or increase the weight of my dumbbell a little more each week. Once I had a better foundation in weight training at home, I was confident enough to try weight training at the gym. Adrian was my coach. He took the time to research various moves and exercises, as well learn about a variety of nutritional concepts. My mother and sister joined us at the gym. Soon enough, working out was a family affair.

The gym we attended was a licensed Les Mills facility. I observed the variety of classes and how the attendance at each widely varied. The owner of the gym asked me if I would like to be a BodyFlow instructor. I never thought about being a fitness instructor, but I decided, “Sure, why not?” Preparing for the training and certification was intense because I was never rhythmically inclined or accustomed to being the center of attention. It pulled me from my comfort zone, but I realized that that was what I wanted. I realized that I wanted to teach others about fitness and help others see the benefits of it as I had.

That was when my idea came to life. I wanted to open a studio that hosted Les Mills classes and encouraged others through group training and motivation. Not necessarily a gym, but an open-spaced facility that brought people together to exercise and motivate each other to live healthy, active lives. Then I decided that if I had this wide open space, why not make it a place to rent out as an event venue? Perhaps even weddings? Suddenly, Busy Bee’s Bodies came to life.

I have always been a busy person, whether it was with activities in school, work, or the community. My name, Melissa, is Greek for “Bee.” Thus, I was a Busy Bee. Busy Bee’s Bodies pertain to fitness, events, and weddings: The Active Body, Social Body, and Divine Body. They encompass three different concepts to root in one location. They desire beauty and happiness. They aspire for connections. They proclaim, “Be active. Be social. Be divine. Be happy. Be a Busy Bee.”—@MelissaBusyBee
